After a prolonged period of strained relations following a diplomatic clash over the killing of a Sikh activist in Canada, India and Canada have outlined a plan to mend ties. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described her recent visit to New Delhi and Mumbai as successful, emphasizing the effort to enhance the relationship.

The deterioration of relations stemmed from accusations by then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linking Indian government agents to the activist’s death in 2023. India refuted the claims, leading to a breakdown in diplomatic ties and subsequent expulsion of diplomats from both countries.

The current focus is on rebuilding the relationship in a more pragmatic manner, considering challenges such as tariffs imposed by the United States. Anand highlighted the importance of economic diplomacy in the current scenario.

Noteworthy developments include the invitation extended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the G7 Summit, signaling a positive shift. Both nations have appointed new high commissioners, with India agreeing to readmit the same number of Canadian diplomats.

During the visit, discussions revolved around cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, critical minerals, and AI technology. The joint statement released after the meeting reflects a renewed commitment to enhancing trade relations, a key aspect of the evolving partnership.

While the statement lacked explicit mention of transnational repression, Anand emphasized raising concerns about public safety and ongoing investigations. The gradual improvement in ties signifies a shift towards constructive engagement, as noted by former Indian diplomat Sanjay Kumar Verma.

The visit has drawn mixed reactions, with some groups expressing dissatisfaction over perceived prioritization of trade over other issues. Despite differing opinions, the overall sentiment among stakeholders, including business leaders, is optimistic about the potential for strengthened ties and increased trade opportunities between Canada and India.
