The Quebec Superior Court has given the green light to a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster, alleging the company imposed unfair service fees on ticket transactions. Justice Eleni Yiannakis, in a decision issued recently, determined that the plaintiffs satisfied the requirements for a full trial and could receive compensatory reimbursements if successful in their claim.
Montreal law firm Paquette Gadler initiated the class action, asserting that Ticketmaster’s service charges contravene Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act and the Quebec Civil Code. The legal action contends that Ticketmaster’s fee structure, which varies with ticket prices rather than reflecting the actual service cost, is exploitative.
The lawsuit, filed in August 2024 on behalf of lead plaintiff Felipe Morales, represents individuals in Quebec who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster for North American events since July 2021. Ticketmaster, a global ticketing platform for concerts, sports, and various shows, has not yet responded to requests for comment following the court’s ruling.
