LISTEN | Discover the canines with an extensive vocabulary:

Playing with your dog is not only enjoyable but also essential for their learning process.

Dogs, being social beings, interpret the world through visual cues and emotional scents. Their vocabulary typically develops by engaging with owners, absorbing words that hold significance to them, such as “walk” or “fetch.”

While most dogs learn a limited number of words, a select few exhibit exceptional word-learning abilities, mastering over 100 words as per a study published in the journal Science.

The research delves into the naming capacity of dogs, suggesting that some can recognize an extensive list of toy names, constrained only by their owner’s patience and toy storage capacity. Shany Dror, a post-doctoral researcher at E.L.T.E. University in Budapest and the Veterinary University of Vienna, highlighted this finding in an interview with Quirks & Quarks.

Remarkably, the study identified around 40 to 45 dogs worldwide capable of learning more than 100 words. These gifted dogs could grasp between 200 and 300 toy names, with one exceptional case understanding over 1,000 words, all related to toys.

Dror emphasized that this skill is not exclusive to specific breeds, noting that while Border Collies were predominant among the adept dogs, other breeds like Pekingese and Yorkshire Terriers also showcased this talent.

Exceptional Canines in Canada

One standout dog is Miso, a seven-year-old Border Collie from Oshawa, Ont., whose owner, Veronica Suen, initially underestimated his intelligence.

Suen discovered Miso’s exceptional abilities when she stumbled upon Dror’s Genius Dog Challenge, prompting her to realize Miso’s proficiency in identifying numerous toy names.

Participating in multiple studies with Dror, Suen now labels each toy for Miso’s recognition, simplifying communication between them. For instance, a Pikachu toy is called “Pikachu,” and a croissant-shaped toy is named “Croissant.”
