U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning to potentially relocate World Cup matches scheduled to take place next year in Foxborough, Massachusetts, near Boston. Trump expressed concerns about unrest in parts of the city and criticized Boston’s mayor, Michelle Wu, calling her “intelligent” but “radical left.”
During a meeting with Argentina President Javier Milei, Trump mentioned the possibility of moving the games, citing issues with the current situation in Boston. He suggested that certain areas of the city had been overtaken without providing specific details but indicated that he believed the situation could be rectified swiftly.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, is set to include matches in various cities, including Foxborough. Despite Trump’s comments, any potential changes to the hosting plan would need to be approved by FIFA, the governing body of international soccer. FIFA’s vice-president, Victor Montagliani, emphasized that decisions regarding the tournament are within FIFA’s jurisdiction and would pose significant challenges if alterations were to be made.
While Trump hinted at the idea of relocating the games if safety concerns arose, he acknowledged that any such decision ultimately rests with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump praised Infantino as a capable leader and suggested that FIFA could easily adjust the tournament’s locations if necessary.
