RCMP have reported that a man from Prince George, B.C., is facing multiple charges in connection with a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of one cyclist and injury to another in July of last year. Thomas Leslie Phillips has been accused of driving under the influence, causing death and bodily harm, as well as leaving the accident scene and reckless operation of a vehicle.
The charges relate to an incident on July 7 when two cyclists were preparing for the Cops for Cancer charity bike ride in Prince George. Shane Kelly, a respected member of the cycling community, lost his life, while the RCMP officer accompanying him sustained serious injuries.
According to the RCMP, the two cyclists were struck by a driver of a black Ram 1500 truck as they rode on the roadside. The driver fled the scene, leaving parts of the vehicle behind. A police pursuit ensued, including a helicopter, with witnesses recounting debris and damaged bike components strewn along the road.
The tragic event has instilled fear in the local cycling community, with concerns raised about safety on the roads. Many cyclists are apprehensive about riding due to the lack of dedicated cycling infrastructure in Prince George, including the absence of designated bike lanes in various areas.
Karin Piche, a close friend of Kelly and leader of the Wheelin’ Warriors cycling team, shared that many individuals, herself included, are hesitant to resume cycling following the incident. While acknowledging the charges brought against the driver, Piche expressed uncertainty about whether it would provide closure to the community grieving Kelly’s loss.
Ron Gallo, another participant in the Cops for Cancer fundraiser, remarked that the charges had resurfaced painful memories but hoped they would lead to enhanced road safety. He praised Kelly for his charitable efforts, which raised significant funds for children and families.
RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Cooper emphasized the profound impact of the case on Prince George and the local RCMP detachment, as Kelly was riding for a police fundraiser when the tragedy occurred. Cooper commended the investigative efforts that led to the charges being laid.
The next court appearance for Phillips is scheduled for December 10.
