A shelter-in-place advisory that was instated for Ginoogaming First Nation on Wednesday has now been lifted by the Ontario Provincial Police. The advisory was put into effect after reports of gunfire in the community earlier in the day. Subsequently, police initiated a search for two individuals who were believed to be armed and dangerous and on the loose in the vicinity.
As of Thursday afternoon, law enforcement authorities confirmed that one individual had been found deceased while another had sustained injuries. Later on Thursday evening, the OPP announced that two men were apprehended following a two-day pursuit of suspects linked to a homicide investigation who were considered armed and dangerous.
Although no further specifics have been disclosed, authorities stated that “the situation in the community has stabilized, and there is no longer an active threat to public safety.” The investigation remains ongoing, and residents in the area are advised to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior.
Additionally, the search efforts prompted various schools and businesses in the area to close temporarily. Representatives from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation convened a press briefing in Thunder Bay on Thursday afternoon to address pressing issues concerning policing, justice, and community safety, against the backdrop of the unfolding events in Ginoogaming First Nation.
The press conference is available for streaming online for those interested in following the developments.
