Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, has raised concerns about the potential risks of AI surpassing human intelligence without proper safeguards in place. He warns that this scenario could lead to human extinction. Hinton, who shares the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics and is a co-founder of the AI Safety Foundation, proposes a solution to this issue.

According to Hinton, one key strategy to safeguard humanity is by training AI to develop maternal instincts. This approach, he suggests, could play a vital role in ensuring the coexistence of humans and AI. In a recent discussion with IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed, Hinton outlined various potential risks associated with AI advancement, including the creation of harmful viruses by terrorists and the manipulation of democracy through fake videos.

Hinton also proposed reshaping the future of AI to prioritize kindness towards humans. Drawing parallels to the relationship between a baby and its mother, he suggested that instilling caring instincts in AI could lead to positive outcomes for society. Despite acknowledging the challenges in implementing such changes, Hinton emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to ensure a beneficial coexistence with AI.

The discussion concluded with a call for increased research efforts focused on developing AI with compassionate traits. Hinton underscored the significance of exploring ways to integrate maternal instincts into AI systems to promote a harmonious relationship between humans and intelligent machines.
