Health P.E.I. highlights a rise in family physicians on the Island from 101 in 2023 to 110 as of October 1 this year. Regarding the relationship with the Medical Society of P.E.I., concerns were raised by Green Party Leader Matt MacFarlane. The society engaged in mediation with Health P.E.I. and the Department of Health and Wellness earlier this year over operational guidelines. Fraser assured ongoing constructive discussions with the medical society to address any issues.
Despite challenges in recruiting psychologists due to high demand nationwide, Health P.E.I. remains committed to attracting top talent. The agency’s workforce recruitment director, Dominick Desjardins, emphasized efforts to entice health care professionals to the Island using modern marketing strategies and competitive lifestyle offerings.
Looking ahead, Fraser stressed the need for P.E.I. to stay competitive in attracting health care staff, with Canada facing a shortage of physicians. Streamlining the hiring process has been a key focus, reducing steps from 49 to 11. Health P.E.I. continues to enhance compensation and benefits packages to appeal to potential recruits, aiming to secure top talent for the province’s health care system.
