Netflix has officially confirmed the development of a sequel to its most-watched film, “KPop Demon Hunters.” The upcoming installment is part of a new exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal for animation with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
Kang, a Korean filmmaker with roots in Toronto, expressed pride in the audience’s desire for more of the Korean story and characters. The original musical film, animated by Sony Pictures Animation, follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix as they navigate their dual lives as superstars and demon hunters. The movie’s breakout anthem, “Golden,” reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, showcasing the talents of lead vocalists EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami.
The film garnered critical acclaim and multiple awards, including recognition at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. Additionally, “Golden” received a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking a historic win for K-pop music.
With record-breaking viewership and continued global popularity of its soundtrack, the success of “KPop Demon Hunters” sets the stage for an eagerly anticipated sequel. Appelhans emphasized the importance of a clear creative direction for the sequel, highlighting the need to create a meaningful and resonant film for both creators and audiences alike.
