Hulu has decided to cancel the planned reboot of the iconic ’90s supernatural series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” as confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed the lead character. Gellar shared the news through an Instagram announcement, revealing that the network had opted not to proceed with the project.
The pilot for the proposed series, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” was filmed with Ryan Kiera Armstrong, a 16-year-old actress cast as the new vampire slayer. The original show, which followed a group of young individuals battling vampires and other paranormal entities in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California, was groundbreaking in its approach to television storytelling.
Cultural critics have highlighted the significant impact of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” on television production, citing its complex narrative arcs, in-depth character development, and exploration of contemporary societal issues. The show’s legacy continues to resonate, even two decades after its debut.
In her Instagram post, Gellar expressed gratitude to Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director enlisted to revive the series. She acknowledged the enduring importance of the character of Buffy and her connection with fans, assuring them that the cancellation does not diminish the character’s significance.
Despite the setback, Gellar reassured fans that she remains dedicated to the character and humorously promised to be available even in the event of a real apocalypse. Hulu has not yet responded to requests for comments on the decision to halt the reboot project.
