Leaders from various countries gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh for a summit led by U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the future of Gaza and broader peace in the Middle East. Trump’s delayed arrival sparked impromptu discussions among leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, who engaged in candid talks about aid delivery to Gaza. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested support for an international stabilization force for Gaza, aligning with Trump’s plan. Carney emphasized the need for swift aid delivery, mentioning Canada’s preparedness to assist through initiatives like Operation Proteus.

The consensus among leaders was for immediate action on humanitarian aid for Gaza, stressing the urgency of tangible changes for Palestinians. Despite concerns about Trump’s communication style, leaders acknowledged his pivotal role in driving the peace process forward. They highlighted the necessity of keeping Trump engaged due to his influence on Israeli actions. The summit, attended by representatives from around 30 countries, aimed to address pressing issues and signal a new phase for peace and security in the region.

Following the summit, Carney emphasized the importance of delivering life-saving aid promptly to alleviate the dire situation in Gaza. The recent conflict, initiated by Hamas in 2023, resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza, underscoring the critical need for immediate humanitarian intervention.
