A 62-year-old bodybuilder hailing from Sarnia, Ontario, has secured a spot in next year’s North American championships after placing third at the Canadian Physique Alliance’s National Pro Qualifier in the men’s bodybuilding masters 60-plus division. Bernie Mockler, who narrowly missed his pro card in August, expressed contentment with his progress and sees this achievement as a step closer to his ultimate goal.
The pro card, awarded by the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB), is a prestigious certification granting professional status to bodybuilders, enabling them to compete in pro-level shows. Only one pro card is distributed annually at the North American championships. Mockler needs to clinch victory in his division and emerge as the top performer among all division winners to secure the coveted card.
Despite the challenges of maintaining peak physical condition and returning to the stage shortly after the North American championships, Mockler’s dedication and consistency have been key to his success. His coach, Tim Love, lauded Mockler’s unwavering commitment over the past four decades, emphasizing the significant payoff from his persistent efforts.
Mockler attributes his youthful vigor at 62 to his rigorous weight and cardio training routines as well as his disciplined eating habits. Beginning each day with a 40-minute cardio session for fat loss before breakfast, he meticulously plans three meals throughout the day followed by a weight workout in the evening. Additionally, Mockler’s expertise in diet and exercise, stemming from his profession as a nurse at a correctional facility, has facilitated positive relationships with inmates, offering them guidance and encouragement.
Looking ahead to the upcoming contest, Mockler aims to gain an additional 10 pounds of muscle over the next six to seven months through off-season mass building before embarking on a four-month period of intense pre-contest conditioning. Despite his rigorous schedule, Mockler recognizes the importance of rest and plans to prioritize sleep after his recent competition, acknowledging the rejuvenating benefits it will provide him.
