A new documentary sheds light on the inception of the Northern Super League, just in time for its inaugural post-season. Directed by Michele Hozer, “The Pitch” delves into the behind-the-scenes journey of establishing the women’s pro league.

The documentary, commencing in late 2022, tracks the efforts of league co-founders Diana Matheson and Thomas Gilbert as they transform their Project 8 vision into reality, ultimately launching the six-team league earlier this year. Viewers witness the visible strain of the process, with Matheson expressing frustration at the prolonged uncertainty they have endured.

Matheson and Gilbert were eager to document the league’s creation and were introduced to Hozer through Nathalie Cook, an early advisor to Project 8. Hozer, known for her acclaimed works such as “Shake Hands with The Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire,” was not able to secure financing for the project until January 2025.

The documentary showcases Matheson’s determination, Bucsis’s unwavering support, and Gilbert’s rational approach, culminating in the successful launch of the league. Former players like Amy Walsh share their experiences, highlighting challenges faced in balancing motherhood and soccer careers.

The film also touches on criticism towards Canada Soccer for its restrictive policies and controversial marketing agreements. However, current Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue garners praise for his efforts in leading the organization towards a positive direction.

Matheson’s pitch for franchise ownership and the challenges of securing the final two teams for league launch are captured in the documentary. The narrative follows the intense pursuit to finalize the six-team roster, showcasing the risks taken to ensure the league’s viability.

Through interviews and emotional reflections, “The Pitch” encapsulates the resilience and dedication of those involved in bringing the Northern Super League to fruition, offering a compelling insight into the arduous but rewarding journey.
