Sandy Brondello is poised to become the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Tempo basketball team. Following her tenure with the New York Liberty, where she guided the team to their first WNBA championship in 2024, Brondello’s contract was not renewed due to a season marred by injuries, culminating in an early playoff exit.

The seasoned coach was also a candidate for the head coach position with the Dallas Wings and the Seattle Storm. The announcement of her appointment to lead the expansion team, Tempo, set to debut next season, was originally disclosed by The Next.

During her time with the New York Liberty, Brondello achieved a record of 107-53 over four seasons, establishing herself as the winningest coach in the franchise’s history. Despite a strong start with nine consecutive victories, the team faced setbacks due to injuries, impacting their performance over the subsequent months.

Prior to her stint with the Liberty, Brondello steered the Phoenix Mercury to a championship in her eight-year tenure with the team. Her success with the Mercury, including a WNBA Finals appearance in 2021, led to her recruitment by the Liberty in 2022.

After finishing as runners-up to Las Vegas in 2023, the New York Liberty clinched the championship in 2024 by triumphing over Minnesota in a thrilling Game 5 overtime contest.
