Swiss skiers Franjo von Allmen and Tanguy Nef clinched the gold medal in the team combined event during its Olympic debut at the Milano-Cortina Games. Initially in fourth place after von Allmen’s downhill run, Nef displayed remarkable speed on a challenging slalom course, leading the Swiss-2 team to victory with a combined time of 2 minutes, 44.04 seconds. The Swiss-1 team, consisting of Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard, and the Austrian-1 team, comprising Vincent Kriechmayr and Manuel Feller, both secured the silver medal, finishing 0.99 seconds behind the winners.
Due to the tie for silver, no bronze medal was awarded. The team combined competition involves one racer competing in downhill and another in slalom, with their times combined to determine the final standings. Von Allmen, who had previously won gold at the world championships, partnered with Nef for this event and successfully defended his title. Nef, facing a 0.42-second deficit on a deteriorating course, managed to make up the time, resulting in a celebratory finish for the Swiss duo.
In the men’s team combined event at the world championships last year, Switzerland dominated by securing gold, silver, and bronze. Italy’s Giovanni Franzoni, the downhill silver medalist, initially led with Italy-1 but dropped to sixth place after a challenging run by Alex Vinatzer. The women’s event is scheduled for the following day, featuring Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson, who previously won the event at the world championships. Johnson, the reigning Olympic downhill champion, claimed victory on Sunday.
