Prime Minister Mark Carney sealed a set of agreements with his Japanese counterpart on Friday aimed at enhancing and updating the bilateral relationship amidst shifts in international dynamics. The agreements were made to strengthen cooperation in defense, energy, critical minerals, trade, and technology under a newly established comprehensive strategic partnership between Canada and Japan.

Although the agreements did not specify monetary figures or detailed plans, Carney emphasized the significance of the new partnership, stating that it would deepen economic and security ties between the two nations. The prime minister’s ability to speak in Japanese during the visit, despite some challenges, impressed Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and the local media.

As part of the partnership, Canada and Japan committed to conducting joint military exercises, exploring collaboration in AI development, identifying investment opportunities, and organizing trade delegations to boost business activities. Additionally, Canada agreed to support Japanese automakers in their efforts to decarbonize operations and expand battery supply chains.

The two countries also agreed to cooperate on international emergency response, conduct joint Coast Guard exercises, combat illegal fishing in the North Pacific, and enhance LNG trade. With Japan importing a significant portion of its energy needs, Canada’s LNG export projects aim to fulfill Japan’s energy requirements.

The partnership signifies a commitment to mutual economic gains and is viewed as a significant milestone in the long-standing diplomatic ties between Canada and Japan. Carney’s visit, following Takaichi’s recent election victory, underscores the importance of fostering relationships with key international partners.

Amidst global economic shifts and uncertainties in traditional trade relationships, Carney’s diplomatic efforts aim to diversify Canada’s trade partners and bolster the economy. The visit to Japan follows successful engagements with India and Australia, resulting in substantial commercial agreements and investment commitments. The collaborative efforts aim to strengthen ties not only politically but also in business, emphasizing the importance of building relationships with key allies in an evolving global landscape.
