The Canadian men’s soccer team returned to Montreal for the first time since 2017, but their homecoming was marred by a 1-0 loss to Australia at Stade Saputo on Friday night. Nestory Irankunda’s goal secured Australia’s 12th consecutive unbeaten match, with only one defeat since March 21, 2024.
Mathieu Choiniere, a Montreal native playing in his hometown for the first time with the national team, acknowledged the team’s effort despite the loss, stating, “I think overall we were the better team and created numerous chances. We could have scored multiple goals, but we will learn from this experience.”
The game saw early controversy as a penalty was not awarded after Tajon Buchanan was brought down in the box. Australia then adopted a defensive 5-4-1 formation, frustrating Canada with a solid defensive block while conceding possession.
Jesse Marsch, the Canadian head coach, praised his team’s effort, highlighting their attacking intent and creativity throughout the match. Despite several close calls, including a near miss by Ismael Kone, Australia’s Alessandro Circati squandered the best opportunity to score in the second half.
Australia capitalized in the 71st minute with Irankunda’s goal, catching Canada off guard. Despite Canada’s late surge for an equalizer, they fell short, with Jacob Shaffelburg missing a crucial chance in the dying minutes.
Both teams traded scoring opportunities in the final stages, with Australia managing the game effectively to secure the win. The match witnessed heated confrontations, with Richie Laryea at the center of the action for Canada.
Looking ahead, Canada will face Colombia on October 14 in New Jersey, while Australia will take on the United States in Colorado on the same day.
