Canada held off Colombia to a scoreless draw in a soccer friendly in Harrison, N.J. The Canadian men, ranked 26th, put up a strong performance against the 13th-ranked Colombians, with midfielder Stephen Eustaquio and winger Tajon Buchanan standing out. Despite the solid showing, Canada coach Jesse Marsch expressed a desire for even better play, emphasizing the team’s capability to excel and win such matches.

Both teams had limited scoring opportunities, with Colombia outshooting Canada 6-4 but only managing one shot on target each. The match saw a high number of fouls, totaling 38, with 23 fouls in the first half alone, keeping the American referee, Guido Gonzales Jr., busy throughout.

Canada’s performance marked an improvement from their recent loss to Australia, showcasing positive signs despite the lack of goals. Buchanan and Niko Sigur were notable contributors, with the latter redeeming himself after a defensive error in the previous game.

In an intense second half, Colombia had a chance to take the lead, but Luis Diaz’s shot narrowly missed the target. Canada also had a goal disallowed due to an offside call. The game saw late pressure from Colombia, with substitute Rafael Santos Borre coming close to scoring, but Canada’s defense held firm, securing a valuable draw.

Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair’s impressive display earned him his ninth clean sheet in 18 international appearances, as he vies for the starting position against Max Crepeau. The match, played in front of a vocal Colombian crowd at Sports Illustrated Stadium, marked the beginning of a series of games against South American opponents for Canada.

Looking ahead, Canada has upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Venezuela to close out the year. Despite the draw, Canada’s overall record this year stands at 6-2-4, with two of those draws ending in penalty shootout defeats.

Colombia, on the other hand, entered the match in good form, having secured a convincing victory over Mexico in their previous outing. The game against Canada was part of a successful streak for Colombia, who have already secured a spot in the upcoming World Cup.

Marsch made strategic changes to the starting lineup, with key players like Eustaquio and St. Clair making notable contributions. The match also saw Diaz, a standout player for Colombia, passing on the captain’s armband to James Rodriguez after coming on in the second half.

With strong performances from players like Laryea and promising substitutions in the second half, Canada showed resilience against a formidable Colombian side. The draw maintained Canada’s historical head-to-head record against Colombia, with the teams now sitting at 1-2-1 in all-time meetings.
