It is the season for the Oscar nominations release, and if you’re not a die-hard movie buff, you may have only caught a glimpse of a few of the films contending for the prestigious award in the cinema industry.
As much of Canada faces a severe cold spell this weekend, it presents an ideal opportunity to catch up on these movies.
Here is a breakdown of the films in the running for an Academy Award for best picture this year and where you can watch them.
Bugonia
Plot: The storyline revolves around two conspiracy-obsessed young men who abduct a high-profile CEO under the belief that she is an alien set on destroying Earth.
Cast: Emma Stone (as the CEO), Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Alicia Silverstone, and comedian Stavros Halkias.

Plot: This film portrays a Formula One racing legend lured out of retirement to mentor a young, talented driver.
Cast: Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Kerry Condon.

Frankenstein
Plot: Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the classic gothic tale portrays a brilliant yet egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life, leading to catastrophic outcomes.
Cast: Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth.
Streaming: Frankenstein can be streamed on Netflix.

Hamnet
Plot: Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, this film depicts the family life of William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway as they cope with the loss of their son, Hamnet, to the plague. It explores the potential impact of this loss on Shakespeare’s creation of Hamlet.
Cast: Paul Mescal as Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife.
Streaming: Hamnet is currently only in theatres.
