Colombia has decided to bring back its ambassador from the United States following President Donald Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs on the nation and a halt in payments. The dispute arose from U.S. military actions against ships suspected of carrying drugs. Trump’s labeling of Colombian President Gustavo Petro as an “illegal drug leader” was met with criticism from Petro’s government.

The Colombian foreign ministry confirmed the recall of Ambassador Daniel Garcia-Pena for consultations in Bogota. The government is expected to disclose further actions soon. Trump’s accusations against Colombia have strained relations between the two countries, with Trump alleging Colombian involvement in the drug trade.

Petro has voiced objections to U.S. military strikes on vessels in the Caribbean, which the U.S. administration justifies as necessary to counter potential threats posed by “narcoterrorists” linked to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Critics, including legal experts and human rights activists, have raised concerns about the legality of these military operations.

Trump’s remarks have led to a deterioration in U.S.-Colombia relations, with Trump threatening to cut financial aid and implement new tariffs. Colombia’s economy heavily relies on trade with the U.S., with 35% of its exports heading north. Trump’s decision to reduce aid further adds to the strain on bilateral ties.

Petro condemned the recent bombing of a vessel by the U.S., emphasizing that the victims were civilians and not associated with any rebel group. He criticized Trump’s derogatory comments and asserted Colombia’s commitment to combating drug trafficking. Despite challenges, Petro remains resolute in addressing drug-related issues in the country.

The escalation in coca cultivation in Colombia has been a persistent challenge, despite significant U.S. aid to combat illegal drug activities. The expansion of coca fields poses environmental and social risks, leading to court rulings against U.S.-funded eradication programs. The U.S. has escalated its military presence in the region to address drug trafficking activities.

Amid calls for transparency regarding the boat strikes, U.S. lawmakers and international observers have raised concerns over the legality and impact of these military actions. Survivors of the boat strikes have been repatriated to Colombia and Ecuador, with questions lingering over the legality and justification of the attacks.
