Former Governor Andrew Cuomo entered the initial New York mayoral debate on Thursday evening aiming to counter the surge of Democratic front-runner Zohran Mamdani. However, he found himself mostly on the defensive, deflecting criticisms about his lengthy tenure in office from Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Cuomo, now running as an independent candidate, continued to portray Mamdani’s platform as overly radical, emphasizing Mamdani’s lack of leadership experience for the largest city in America. Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, retaliated by attacking Cuomo’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the sexual harassment allegations that Cuomo denies.

Although the debate spanned two hours and touched on various topics such as the approach towards President Donald Trump, quality of life concerns, and affordability, it remained uncertain if any candidate succeeded in significantly influencing the audience’s opinion.

Cuomo faced significant pressure during the debate, as it represented one of his final opportunities to persuade voters that choosing Mamdani, who defeated him in the primary earlier this year, would be a misstep. This political race is also Cuomo’s bid for a return to the political arena after his resignation four years ago due to the sexual harassment accusations.

Mamdani, maintaining a cheerful demeanor throughout the debate to uphold the optimistic and charismatic image of his campaign, emphasized his agenda on affordability and aimed to present himself as a pragmatic liberal rather than an extremist ideologue.

The race has propelled Mamdani into the national political spotlight, with efforts from Republicans, including Trump, to depict him as the face of the Democratic Party by highlighting his controversial statements and positions, labeling him as dangerous, a communist, and an anti-Semite.

Meanwhile, Sliwa, a Republican and the founder of the Guardian Angels crime patrol group, attempted to elevate his underdog campaign despite calls for him to withdraw. Instead of aligning with Cuomo against Mamdani, he spent a considerable amount of time undermining the former governor.

Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, suspended his reelection campaign recently due to the impact of a dismissed federal corruption case and his ties to the Trump administration.

Key highlights from the debate include Mamdani defending against attacks on his limited job experience and ambitious agenda, while Cuomo emphasized his extensive background to undermine Mamdani’s candidacy. Mamdani countered by emphasizing his integrity over experience and criticized Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic and legal issues related to the harassment allegations.

The discussion also delved into Mamdani’s past statements regarding Israel, with Cuomo pointing out his previous hesitation to condemn certain phrases seen as incendiary. Mamdani clarified his stance on disarmament and distanced himself from controversial language. Sliwa raised concerns about Mamdani’s reliability in supporting Jewish communities during times of antisemitism.

The debate also touched on the role of President Trump, with Mamdani expressing a willingness to collaborate with Trump on specific issues while asserting his readiness to stand up to the president when needed.

The upcoming second and final debate is scheduled for the following week.
