A pet parrot named Bleu made a daring escape from her home in Torquay, Saskatchewan, flying 500 kilometers to Prince Albert in the northern part of the province. Bleu, an Indian Ringneck bird, took advantage of an open door on May 3 and flew out of Rhys MacLean’s parents’ house. Despite feeling terrible about the escape, MacLean and his family found it challenging to locate Bleu due to her ability to fly long distances.
MacLean mentioned that the move from Calgary to Torquay in 2024 may have influenced Bleu’s behavior. Feeling hopeless about finding the bird, MacLean posted on a local lost and found page on Facebook, not expecting much success. However, the community responded with enthusiasm, sending messages and tips to aid in the search.
Despite the outpouring of support, none of the leads seemed promising. Bleu, being a domestic bird, was elusive and difficult to catch even in enclosed spaces. However, after a month of being missing, a woman in Prince Albert contacted the Saskatoon Parrot Rescue, leading to Bleu’s safe capture and return home. MacLean described Bleu’s return as a successful mission, with the parrot eventually recovering and reuniting with her cage-mate, Kiwi.
