The Elks secured a crucial 25-20 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with two impressive third-quarter touchdowns and a resilient fourth-quarter defense. Edmonton’s CFL playoff aspirations received a boost with running back Justin Rankin’s 64-yard touchdown run on a third-down play and Kordell Jackson’s 47-yard touchdown following a teammate’s fumble recovery. Despite challenging conditions in front of 15,013 fans on a cold, rainy evening in Edmonton, the Elks managed to edge out a win.
Coach Mark Kilam commended his team for their ability to grind out a victory against a strong opponent, emphasizing the importance of all three phases contributing to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Elks, who started the season 1-6, must now win their remaining two games, including a crucial matchup against the Calgary Stampeders, to secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2019.
The win, marking Edmonton’s third victory in five games, improved their overall record to 7-9. Although they currently sit at the bottom of the West Division, they are only two points behind the Bombers, who hold a potential tiebreaker due to a previous win over the Elks. However, if Edmonton can defeat Calgary in their next encounter, they would hold the tiebreaker advantage.
Rankin’s explosive touchdown run and Jackson’s fumble recovery for a score helped the Elks build a commanding lead during the game. Jackson’s pivotal play showcased his dedication to the team and the game, with his timely recovery leading to a crucial touchdown. Despite a late field goal from the Bombers and a spirited comeback attempt, Edmonton’s defense stood firm, forcing turnovers and sealing the victory.
Edmonton’s quarterback Cody Fajardo and Winnipeg’s Zach Collaros both had solid performances, with Fajardo completing 13 of 14 passes and Rankin showcasing his rushing prowess with 138 yards on 18 carries. The Blue Bombers, now looking ahead to a matchup against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, acknowledged their shortcomings in team cohesion and execution, attributing the loss to Edmonton’s strong play and a bit of luck.
The Elks will face the B.C. Lions in their next game as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot, while the Bombers aim to bounce back against the Roughriders.
