Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers has decided to return her Toronto Film Critics Association Award following the omission of a segment in her acceptance speech where she expressed solidarity with Palestine. The TFCA’s president, Johanna Schneller, explained that the removal was due to time constraints but revealed her resignation in light of the situation.

Tailfeathers, recognized for her outstanding supporting performance in the Canadian film “Sweet Angel Baby” directed by Melanie Oates, was not present at the gala on Monday. Instead, she sent a video acceptance speech, which she claims was censored.

In an email to the TFCA, Tailfeathers stated that she is returning her award, emphasizing that she adhered to guidelines on recording her speech. Schneller expressed sadness over Tailfeathers’ decision to give back the award, clarifying that the speech, including other recipients’, was edited to ensure the event’s schedule.

However, Tailfeathers argued that her remarks on the Palestine conflict were minimal, comprising only two sentences, and criticized the decision to sanitize and suppress her words.

In response to the incident, multiple resignations have occurred within the TFCA, with members like Adam Nayman, Saffron Maeve, Sarah-Tai Black, and Radheyan Simonpillai announcing their departure from the organization on social media.

The segment that was removed from Tailfeathers’ speech referenced the impact of the conflict in Palestine during the filming of “Sweet Angel Baby.” She expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people enduring ongoing challenges and commended industry figures speaking out on the issue.

Tailfeathers, known for her accolades at the Canadian Screen Awards, stressed in her email that she refuses to be silenced regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. She also extended empathy to the Jewish community affected by antisemitic violence, emphasizing the importance of addressing all forms of discrimination.

Amidst escalating tensions, Tailfeathers emphasized the need to combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian sentiments, acknowledging the courage of those within the Jewish community advocating against injustices. She closed her statement by expressing solidarity with Palestinian artists and filmmakers, quoting Fatima Hassouna’s poignant words.

The conflict in Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack in October 2023, resulted in significant casualties and continued hostilities until a ceasefire agreement was reached in October 2025. The toll of the conflict, particularly on civilians, has been devastating, with thousands losing their lives, including women and children, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry.

The situation underscores the complex dynamics and humanitarian challenges in the region, prompting discussions on global responses and the importance of advocating for peace and justice.
