Stephen Gogolev once faced the possibility of retiring from figure skating as he grappled with a series of setbacks, including a significant growth spurt and recurring back injuries that derailed his promising career trajectory. Struggling to maintain his competitive edge and far from reaching the international podiums he once seemed destined for, Gogolev contemplated leaving the sport for good after his season was cut short for the second consecutive year in December.
However, the 20-year-old skater decided to give it one last shot, a choice he now believes was the right one. Gogolev, hailing from Toronto, recently claimed his first senior gold medal at the Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany, on the Challenger Series, showcasing his talent with impressive performances in both the short and long programs. His total score of 255.06 points would have secured him the 11th spot at the previous season’s world championships, marking a significant achievement for the young athlete.
Following a three-month hiatus from the ice to focus on recovery and rehabilitation, Gogolev returned to training under the guidance of his coach, Lee Barkell, at Toronto’s Granite Club. Barkell noted a renewed energy and passion for the sport in Gogolev, emphasizing his improved focus on both technical elements and artistic expression in his routines.
French choreographer Benoit Richaud, another coach of Gogolev, observed a positive transformation in the skater, noting his regained enthusiasm and expressive qualities on the ice. Gogolev attributed his current success to his improved physical condition and consistent training regimen, highlighting that he can now concentrate on honing his skills rather than battling injuries.
Looking ahead, Gogolev is set to compete at Skate Canada International on the Grand Prix circuit with his sights firmly set on the ultimate goal: the Olympics. Despite facing stiff competition for a spot on the Canadian team, including from fellow skaters Roman Sadovsky and Keegan Messing, Barkell expressed confidence in Gogolev’s potential to secure a place at the upcoming Games.
Having overcome past challenges, including the effects of a growth spurt and relocation for training purposes, Gogolev is determined to continue his upward trajectory in the sport, striving to improve each day with his eyes firmly fixed on Olympic glory.
