A French archipelago known as Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, located off the coast of Newfoundland, offers a unique blend of rugged beauty and European charm. Despite its small size of 242 square kilometers, the islands are steeped in rich character and history, reminiscent of a piece of France set in the North Atlantic. Visitors can explore cobblestone streets where horses roam freely and uncover remnants of its notorious rum-running past.
French actor Josephine Jobert and Newfoundland’s Allan Hawco, lead actors in the CBC’s latest drama series “Saint-Pierre,” shared their enchanting experiences of living on the island during filming. Their characters are compelled to work together to solve distinctive crimes, leading them to discover hidden treasures such as exquisite French cuisine and a retro disco where they danced the night away.
Jobert, unfamiliar with the location initially, found it vital to explore another part of her country. She described feeling both at home with familiar French elements like patisseries and wine, yet also isolated in a positive way, shielded from the outside world by the island’s unique lifestyle and independence from external opinions. Hawco highlighted the special relationship between Newfoundland and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, emphasizing the interdependence for services and goods between the two regions.
Their off-set adventures included shopping for enticing local goods and indulging in exquisite dining experiences. The duo also enjoyed the island’s retro disco ambiance and the opportunity to interact with the freely roaming horses. Hawco praised the island’s dedication to culinary excellence and the serious approach to their cuisine, including their meticulous attention to details like sauces and amuse-bouches.
Filming on Saint-Pierre transformed their perception of the island, deepening their appreciation for its beauty and distinctiveness. Jobert noted similarities in the straightforward and honest demeanor of the locals, akin to French candor, while acknowledging the unique and special nature of the island’s inhabitants.
The new drama series “Saint-Pierre” premiered on January 6, offering viewers an immersive experience of the captivating island. Viewers can enjoy new episodes on CBC Gem every Monday at 9 a.m. ET and on CBC-TV at 9 p.m. ET (9:30 p.m. NT).
