After more than 15 years of back-and-forth, the Keystone XL pipeline might be making a comeback. The project, which has faced multiple setbacks and cancellations, is now being reconsidered, sparking optimism among its supporters.

During a recent meeting at the White House, Prime Minister Mark Carney reportedly discussed the revival of the Keystone XL oil pipeline with U.S. President Donald Trump. While the project has a tumultuous history of approvals and rejections, there seems to be a renewed interest in its potential resurrection.

South Bow, the current owner of the Keystone Pipeline, expressed support for boosting the transportation of Canadian crude oil. This stance marks a shift from their previous position earlier this year when they indicated they had moved on from the project.

Experts like Richard Masson, from the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, view the potential revival of the Keystone XL pipeline with cautious optimism. However, significant challenges lie ahead, including the need for a new proponent, right of way, and pipeline infrastructure.

In 2020, the Alberta government invested about $1.5 billion in equity towards the Keystone XL pipeline. With the project resurfacing on the political agenda, discussions are underway on how to ensure its successful development and operation.

While there is growing support for reviving the Keystone XL pipeline, concerns persist about the project’s environmental impact and legal hurdles. Despite the potential economic benefits, securing long-term continuity for the pipeline remains uncertain given past cancellations and evolving regulations.

As discussions around the Keystone XL pipeline gain momentum, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments to gauge the project’s feasibility in the current political and environmental landscape.
