The culprits targeted the Apollo Gallery, making off with the remaining French crown jewels, estimated by Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau to be worth 88 million euros or $143 million Canadian as of Tuesday.
This daring robbery, dubbed “the heist of the century” by various media outlets, has captured worldwide attention in the hours and days following the incident. Internally, the crime has sparked a blame game within the country, with reactions ranging from viewing the theft as an assault on French heritage to criticizing the museum’s security protocols and calling for enhanced measures at museums globally.

Other notable incidents include the theft of valuable porcelain from the Adrien Dubouche Museum in September 2025 and the robbery of gold nuggets from Paris’s National Museum of Natural History in the same month. Earlier in November 2024, 18th-century snuffboxes were stolen from the Cognacq-Jay Museum, followed by an armed gang stealing jewels from the Hiéron Museum in Paray-le-Monial.
Christopher Marinello, the founder of Art Recovery International, emphasized the financial constraints faced by most museums in ensuring adequate security measures. The breach at the well-funded Louvre sends a strong message about the vulnerability of all museums to such criminal activities.
Politicians have swiftly capitalized on the heist to advance their agendas, turning the incident into a political battleground amid existing challenges within the government. Opposition figures have seized upon the theft as a national embarrassment, with calls for resignations within the museum’s leadership.
Culture Minister Rachida Dati has oscillated between attributing the incident to managerial lapses and asserting the effectiveness of the museum’s security apparatus. The government has pledged to investigate the security breach and bolster security protocols across cultural institutions in France.
