MLA-elect Kevin Russell expressed gratitude for winning the Miramichi West seat for the New Brunswick Progressive Conservatives in a recent election. As the former mayor of Miramichi River Valley, Russell secured victory over Liberal candidate Hannah Fulton Johnston by a margin of close to 1,000 votes in the extensive riding covering Doaktown, Boiestown, Blackville, Renous, and Sunny Corner.

Russell stated that his decision to enter the political arena stemmed from a lifelong dedication to assisting others. He highlighted that after considering the opportunity and recognizing the potential to address various community needs, he felt compelled to step forward.

The primary concerns voiced by residents to Russell ranged from healthcare and housing to employment and infrastructure, emphasizing the multifaceted challenges faced by the community. Russell underscored the unacceptable delays in accessing healthcare services, stressing the necessity for immediate improvements.

During the campaign period, Russell traveled approximately 9,000 kilometers, engaging with constituents to understand their diverse concerns on a personal level. He pledged to address each issue raised by residents, acknowledging the unique perspectives and challenges within the community.

Following the election, local voters shared their priorities with a CBC News team. Concerns ranged from the affordability of groceries and healthcare access raised by Joy Walls in Blackville to road safety issues highlighted by Alvin Harris in Renous. In Doaktown, resident Gilbert Thibodeau expressed disappointment over the absence of an MLA in recent months and stressed the critical need for improved healthcare access.

Overall, residents such as Kim Demerchant echoed the sentiment for a bolstered healthcare system and increased minimum wage to address pressing community needs effectively.
