Kelsey Mitchell, an Olympic gold medalist in track cycling, is excited about the potential she has discovered in bobsledding. Following a spring bobsled tryout camp where she was praised for her potential, Mitchell is fully committed to exploring this new sport. She will be joining the Canadian bobsled team at a training camp in Whistler, B.C., before the World Cup season begins in Cortina, Italy.
Despite only starting cycling four years before winning gold in the women’s sprint at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Mitchell is now looking to make a mark in bobsled. Having previously attempted bobsledding at the age of 21, she acknowledges the improvements in her leg power and explosiveness that have come from her track cycling background. With a focus on adapting her technique to the demands of bobsled push starts, Mitchell is determined to excel in this new challenge.
While Mitchell plans to eventually return to track cycling with an eye on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, she is currently embracing the opportunity to be part of the bobsled team. Inspired by the possibility of becoming a dual-season Olympian, Mitchell values the supportive team environment and the chance to contribute to Team Canada’s success.
Reflecting on her past experiences in cycling and speedskating, Mitchell recognizes the importance of staying healthy in bobsled, where the physical demands differ from her previous sports. Despite facing challenges and adjusting to new aches and pains, Mitchell’s coachability and determination have impressed Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton’s high-performance director and strength and conditioning coach.
With a winning mentality and a strong desire to succeed, Mitchell’s transition to bobsled showcases her adaptability and drive to excel in this fast-paced winter sport.
