The Pownal parkade in Charlottetown is set to close to non-permit users beginning next week for maintenance. The parkade, established in 1988 with 400 spaces, primarily caters to monthly permit holders, businesses, and residents. During the initial phase of refurbishments, access will be limited to monthly permit holders, businesses, and residents with reserved spots, with parking restricted to lower levels only.
Throughout the first phase, the parkade will not be accessible to the general public, with this stage expected to last until the end of November. Councilor Mitchell Tweel suggests that non-permit holders can utilize on-street parking in the vicinity during the closure, albeit needing to utilize parking meters during business hours. Tweel acknowledges the increased challenge of street parking but emphasizes the necessity of the maintenance due to the parkade’s age.
Construction will halt during the winter season, with full reopening anticipated at that time. Work will recommence in April, reverting to exclusive use by monthly permit holders, and is slated for completion in July.
