Rory Linkletter, a track scholarship student at Brigham Young University, witnessed Cam Levins setting a new Canadian marathon record at the Toronto Waterfront event in 2018. Linkletter, who had already competed for Canada internationally, had his sights set on the marathon despite his successful track career. Coached by Ed Eyestone, a former Olympic marathon runner, Linkletter was inspired by Levins’ remarkable performance in Toronto.
After completing his studies, Linkletter made his marathon debut in Toronto, clocking a time of 2:16:42. With improved training and coaching, Linkletter has seen significant progress in the marathon distance, achieving a 2:07:02 personal best in Boston this year and qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics with a time of 2:08:01.
At the upcoming Chicago Marathon, Linkletter aims to challenge Levins’ Canadian and North American record of 2:05:36. Linkletter expressed his ambition to become one of Canada’s top runners and is determined to achieve his goal.
Reflecting on his previous races, Linkletter described his 2024 Olympic debut in Paris as a “humbling experience.” Levins, anticipating Linkletter’s performance in the upcoming race, emphasized the importance of healthy competition among Canadian athletes.
Linkletter, who recently won the Canadian half marathon title, is prepared to face the challenges of the Chicago Marathon. Despite his familiarity with the course, he understands the uncertainties of the race and expects to push himself to his limits to achieve his goals.
Having set a new Canadian half marathon record in the past, Linkletter is now focused on breaking the Canadian marathon record. He views this opportunity as a career-defining moment that could elevate his status in the running world.
As Linkletter gears up for the Chicago Marathon, he remains motivated to make a mark in Canadian running history and is prepared to give his all to reach his ambitious target.
