Russia initiated a widespread drone and missile assault on Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, including two children, as confirmed by Ukrainian authorities. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have been put on hold following a statement from the White House that there are currently no immediate plans for a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine’s energy minister reported a significant coordinated attack on the nation’s energy infrastructure still ongoing early Wednesday. This attack is part of Russia’s strategy to weaken Ukraine’s energy system ahead of winter. The assault caused power outages across the country, with repairs already in progress to restore electricity as soon as possible, according to the Ukrainian Energy Ministry.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed frustration, stating that the recent attack highlights Russia’s lack of restraint in prolonging the conflict. He highlighted the damages inflicted on various cities, including Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Poltava, Vinnytsia, as well as the broader regions of Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Sumy.
Zelenskyy called on the European Union, the United States, and the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations to implement sanctions against Russia, emphasizing the need for a united response to Russia’s aggressive actions. In response, Trump imposed sanctions on Russia targeting oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft, marking the first sanctions during his second term.
The conflict escalated further as Russia launched 405 drones and 28 missiles, with Ukraine’s air force managing to intercept 16 missiles and 333 drones. In a retaliatory move, Ukraine’s forces targeted a crucial chemical plant in Russia’s Bryansk region, using air-to-surface Storm Shadow missiles, impacting the plant’s military and industrial production capabilities.

Additionally, in the Dnipro district of Kyiv, two more casualties were reported following a fire caused by drone debris hitting a residential building.
The assault extended to several cities, affecting Zaporizhzhia, Izmail in Odesa region, and other regions, causing significant damages to energy infrastructure and resulting in emergency blackouts. Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed capturing villages in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions and justified its actions as a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian targets.
While Trump is expected to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, plans for a summit with Putin in Hungary remain uncertain. The delay in the meeting followed Russia reiterating terms for a peace deal, including Ukraine ceding control of the southeastern Donbas region, a condition rejected by Trump. Zelenskyy viewed Trump’s proposal for both sides to halt at current frontlines as a positive compromise, but doubts Putin’s compliance.
Ukraine is seeking to purchase 25 Patriot air defense systems from U.S. firms using frozen Russian assets and assistance from partners. Zelenskyy acknowledged the time-consuming procurement process but expressed optimism about accelerating the acquisition with Trump’s assistance.
