A man in Toronto faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and making threats following a violent attack on a hotel employee in Markham last month, which authorities describe as motivated by hate. The victim, a Muslim man as identified by the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), was reportedly questioned about his ethnic and religious background by a hotel guest. Upon revealing his Muslim identity, he was physically assaulted.

The NCCM highlighted the severe and life-altering injuries sustained by the victim, emphasizing the need for safety for all Canadians, particularly in the face of Islamophobia. Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s special representative on combating Islamophobia, condemned the attack as horrifying and vicious, expressing concerns that the victim may never fully recover.

According to York Regional Police, the incident occurred at a hotel near Highway 7 E. and Commerce Valley Drive W. on Sept. 28. Responding to a report of an ongoing assault shortly after 3 a.m., police found the 54-year-old employee with serious head injuries. The 31-year-old suspect was arrested nearby. The altercation reportedly escalated after the suspect’s credit card was declined, with the victim being targeted upon revealing his Muslim background.

Authorities stressed their condemnation of hate-driven actions and reassured their commitment to protecting all residents. The NCCM echoed the need for tangible change to combat such incidents across Canada, urging elected officials to refrain from using Islamophobic language that contributes to fostering a climate of discrimination. Ontario Premier Doug Ford reiterated the government’s stance against Islamophobia and pledged to stand by the Muslim community.

Police emphasized their dedication to thoroughly investigating reports of hate crimes and encouraged residents to report any incidents promptly for immediate action.
