U.S. President Donald Trump and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced on social media that no federal agents would be sent to San Francisco. This decision is unexpected as Trump has been urging Democratic-led cities to increase law enforcement efforts against crime and illegal immigration.

In a post on his social media account, Mayor Lurie, a Democrat, revealed that Trump had informed him of the cancellation of any plans for a federal deployment during a phone call on Wednesday night. While the city will continue collaborating with federal agencies to combat drug-related crimes, Lurie emphasized that militarized immigration enforcement would not be beneficial.

Trump confirmed the agreement in his own social media post, stating that the federal government had been preparing for a surge in San Francisco but would now call it off. The president mentioned that two prominent tech executives, Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Marc Benioff of Salesforce, had expressed optimism about San Francisco’s future.

Despite initial reports suggesting a federal deployment, the Trump administration’s plan to send over 100 federal agents to the city for immigration enforcement has been halted. This decision comes after protests from both citizens and local officials, including Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, who denounced the potential deployment as divisive and intimidating.

Trump’s administration has been vocal about cracking down on illegal immigration, aiming to deport a significant number of undocumented immigrants whom he portrays as criminals and burdens on society. However, this approach has faced criticism from Democrats in various cities for causing fear among law-abiding residents, separating families, and negatively impacting businesses.

While Trump had previously indicated that San Francisco would be the next target for National Guard troops, the recent developments mark a departure from these plans. The decision to forgo a federal deployment in San Francisco reflects a shift in strategy following objections and concerns raised by local leaders and community members.
