A duo of bald eagles became entangled in Surrey, B.C., necessitating assistance from power and fire crews to rescue the birds, as reported by the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta, B.C. The eagles got ensnared in a power line above a residential street during a fight, with images showing them hanging upside down with their legs wrapped in the wire and wings spread wide.
Video footage of the rescue operation depicts three individuals from the fire department approaching the entangled birds using a ladder bucket. One person initiated the untangling process by pulling on the wires while another, wearing protective gloves, clapped to send the eagles in opposite directions, freeing them from their predicament unharmed.
The society explained that bald eagles often engage in fights to defend their nest or young during this time of the year, and the successful rescue allowed the eagles to return to their respective offspring. B.C. Hydro confirmed that its crews promptly de-energized the line upon notification to facilitate a safe rescue operation.
Surrey Fire Services collaborated with the bird rescue group, deploying a member up the ladder to carefully separate the eagles’ talons. Once freed, both eagles flew off immediately, unscathed.
