A principal in southern Manitoba has taken legal action against a parent who attempted to have certain books removed from school libraries. The principal, Mary Reimer of Carman Collegiate, has filed a lawsuit against Raelyn Fox, accusing her of making defamatory statements on social media suggesting that the principal endorsed the distribution of child pornography.

Reimer claims that Fox has persistently targeted the Prairie Rose School Division and her high school years, even after initially raising concerns about sexually explicit materials in the library when her child attended the school in 2023. In the court documents submitted to the Court of King’s Bench, Reimer is seeking damages and an injunction to prevent Fox from making statements insinuating that she supported the availability of pornographic content to students or engaged in inappropriate behavior with children.

The principal emphasized the damaging impact of the allegations made by Fox, stating that the accusations of her involvement in the sexual abuse of children are harmful and irreparable. Fox had initiated a petition in 2023 urging the Prairie Rose School Division to restrict access to books she deemed sexually explicit for minors in school libraries.

Reimer refuted Fox’s claims that certain controversial books were readily accessible at Carman Collegiate’s library, clarifying that some of the books mentioned were either not in circulation or located in a section restricted to mature students. Despite being informed of this, Fox allegedly continued to assert on social media that these books were widely available.

Expressing concerns about escalating tensions fueled by Fox’s social media posts, Reimer highlighted fears of potential violence within the community due to the inflammatory nature of the statements. The principal also sought an order for Fox to remove defamatory social media content, including a post alleging that Reimer advocated for explicit content to be accessible to children.

In response, Fox denied the defamatory nature of her posts, stating that while some books were not physically shelved, they were listed in the library’s catalog, and she encountered similar content during a library visit. Fox also denied referencing LGBTQ themes in her discussions with the board of trustees, despite another delegation raising this issue.

According to the Canadian Library Challenges Database, which tracks book removal requests, the Prairie Rose School Division faced demands to remove approximately 20 titles, including materials featuring sex education and 2SLGBTQ+ content. The center’s director noted a rising trend of activist groups targeting schools under the guise of protecting parental rights, with some asserting violations of child pornography laws in relation to educational materials.

Fox’s actions have extended to other Manitoba school divisions through social media videos. She has refrained from commenting on the ongoing lawsuit but expressed gratitude for donations supporting her legal defense. Concerns have been raised about the potential consequences of schools hastily removing controversial books without proper oversight due to financial constraints, potentially leading to issues being swept under the rug.

While Reimer and the Prairie Rose School Division declined to provide comments on the matter, the legal dispute between the principal and the parent continues to unfold.
