Cricket Canada has made the decision to place its chief executive officer, Salman Khan, on immediate suspension, although he will continue to receive full pay and benefits during this time. The move is described as non-disciplinary and is aimed at safeguarding the organization’s integrity and ensuring fair procedures, according to a statement from Cricket Canada president Amjad Bajwa.

In light of charges of theft and fraud over $5,000 brought against Khan and another individual linked to their involvement with the Calgary and District Cricket League, the organization is taking proactive steps. Despite Khan’s denial of the allegations through a social media post shared by the Alberta Cricket Association, concerns over the impact of the charges on the organization have led to his suspension.

Bajwa mentioned that the decision to suspend Khan was influenced by the negative implications associated with his ongoing situation. While the charges have not been proven in court, they are causing disruptions within the organization. Cricket Canada has disclosed that an independent special committee, in collaboration with the executive committee and external legal advisors, will conduct a thorough review, although the specifics of the review were not outlined.

The organization emphasized its unwavering commitment to its vision, mission, players, and the broader Canadian cricket community amidst the leadership transition and reinforced governance priorities. Additionally, Cricket Canada recently faced suspension from the Canadian Safe Sport Program due to non-compliance with participant e-learning and consent requirements. However, following corrective actions, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport has reinstated Cricket Canada after confirming compliance with the necessary standards.
