Grant Avenue Studio, a renowned record studio in Hamilton that has seen the likes of Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash, is commemorating 50 years in the music industry. Established in 1976 by Daniel Lanois, Bob Lanois, and Bob Doidge, the studio, situated in a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E, has been a magnet for top musical talents both locally and globally.

In 2023, Mike Bruce, along with Debbie Bruce and Marco Mondano, took over the studio. Describing it as a “living museum,” Bruce highlighted the historical significance and unique charm of the studio, which was transformed into a soundproof environment through sheer determination and experimentation by its founders.

Local music enthusiast Jamie Tennant noted that Grant Avenue Studio has amassed a legendary reputation over the years, with artists drawn to its historical aura, stemming from luminaries like Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno, who collaborated with Daniel Lanois at the studio.

Despite minimal updates since the 1970s and ’80s, such as new flooring and acoustic treatments, the studio features distinctive elements like window wells filled with sand for soundproofing. Bruce emphasized the diverse range of talents that have graced the studio, from opera singers to indie artists, underscoring Hamilton’s vibrant music scene.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Grant Avenue Studio plans to continue its “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” initiative, hosting intimate YouTube concerts featuring local artists. The studio’s vintage MCI JH-500C control console, reminiscent of the equipment used for iconic rock albums like “Hotel California” and “Back in Black,” adds to its allure, attracting artists with its blend of history and cutting-edge technology.

With a series of special events lined up, including an anniversary party, museum exhibition, and the Road to Supercrawl contest, Grant Avenue Studio looks forward to marking its milestone year in grand style.
