Britney Spears, represented by her lawyer, pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge in a Southern California court, avoiding jail time for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The 44-year-old singer did not personally attend the hearing in Ventura County. Instead, her attorney Michael A. Goldstein accepted the plea deal known as a “wet reckless,” leading to a sentence of probation, a mandatory DUI course, and state-imposed fines.
The district attorney’s office stated that this plea arrangement is typical for individuals without prior DUI offenses, no accidents, and low blood-alcohol levels. It is commonly offered to those demonstrating a commitment to addressing their issues, which Spears displayed by voluntarily entering a substance abuse treatment facility earlier.
Goldstein expressed satisfaction with the outcome, acknowledging the unfortunate necessity of the guilty plea to move forward. He commended Spears for her proactive steps towards self-improvement. The singer recently completed her treatment program and returned home as part of her rehabilitation process.
During the hearing, Spears was placed on summary probation, freeing her from mandatory meetings with a parole officer. However, she agreed to forfeit her Fourth Amendment rights during traffic stops, granting authorities the ability to conduct searches and sobriety tests. Notably, this provision does not extend to her residence.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko emphasized that Spears accepted full responsibility for her actions, emphasizing the seriousness of DUI offenses. He stressed the importance of complying with the court-mandated requirements, including ongoing substance abuse treatment, regular therapy sessions, and psychiatric evaluations to prevent any future incidents.
Spears, charged with a single DUI misdemeanor, was not obliged to attend her arraignment in court. The incident drew significant media attention in Ventura, where she resides. Following her arrest for erratic driving on U.S. 101, Spears underwent field sobriety tests and was subsequently detained. Authorities confirmed the presence of alcohol and drugs in her system without specifying the substances or her blood alcohol concentration.
The singer’s representatives previously described her behavior as unacceptable and hoped it would prompt positive changes in her life. Spears has not commented publicly since the charges were filed against her.
