Britney Spears, aged 44, is facing charges in California for driving under the influence of a mix of alcohol and drugs, according to officials from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. The charges stem from an incident where the pop star was arrested on March 4 after being stopped for driving recklessly in her black BMW on U.S. 101 near her residence, as reported by the California Highway Patrol.
Following a series of field sobriety tests that indicated impairment, Spears was apprehended for suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. She was later taken to a Ventura County jail and subsequently released on bail. The investigation was concluded on March 23, with prosecutors now prepared to move forward with the case.
An unnamed representative, addressing Spears’ actions, described them as “completely inexcusable” and emphasized the necessity for significant changes in her life moving forward. Spears voluntarily sought treatment for substance abuse shortly after the incident.
An arraignment for Spears is scheduled for Monday, though her physical presence in court is not mandated due to the nature of the misdemeanor charge. The singer, known for hits like “Toxic” and “Oops! … I Did It Again,” rose to fame in the late ’90s and early 2000s but has faced intense media scrutiny over the years, including struggles with mental health and a highly publicized conservatorship managed by her father and legal team, which ended in 2021.
Despite a successful music career, including multiple platinum and diamond-certified albums, Spears has largely withdrawn from the spotlight in recent years, with minimal musical releases since 2016.
