Months after Sydney Sweeney showcased her favorite denim in an American Eagle advertisement, the actress has opened up about the ensuing controversy in a recent interview with GQ. Sweeney defended the ad while emphasizing that she was unfazed by the online chatter it generated.

Speaking to the magazine, the “Euphoria” and “White Lotus” star addressed the unexpected reaction to the ad, clarifying that her love for jeans is genuine as she wears them daily. The advertisement featured Sweeney playing with the words “jeans” and “genes,” which some interpreted as hinting at eugenicist concepts, a notion she dismissed.

American Eagle responded to the backlash, reiterating that the ad solely focused on promoting jeans and not genetics, emphasizing inclusivity and confidence in wearing their brand. Despite widespread media coverage and discussions, Sweeney remained largely quiet, even as prominent figures like former President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance weighed in on the ad.

Acknowledging the impact on American Eagle’s stock value following the ad’s release, Sweeney shared her awareness of the positive financial outcomes for the company. However, she admitted being shielded from the social media storm due to her busy filming schedule for “Euphoria,” where she works long hours and avoids distractions on set.

Aside from her involvement in the ad, Sweeney highlighted her upcoming projects, including the film “Christy,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. When asked about potential audience backlash affecting the film due to the ad controversy, Sweeney expressed confidence in the movie’s ability to resonate with viewers, hoping to inspire understanding beyond online narratives.
