Parks Canada is currently conducting an investigation into a suspected poaching incident involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 in the marsh area of the park. Authorities are seeking information from individuals who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area during that timeframe.

The government agency emphasized that poaching is a severe violation under the Canada National Parks Act. They are urging anyone with relevant dashcam footage from the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas to come forward and assist with the investigation.

One regular park visitor, Debra Parker, expressed her distress over the incident, noting that a nesting female swan was reportedly shot, as per photos provided by a friend who witnessed the aftermath and alerted park officials. Another visitor, Melissa Hargreaves, shared her observations of the serene behavior of the swan just a day before the incident, highlighting the peaceful and nurturing demeanor of the bird.

The community, including individuals like Wallaceburg resident Larry Strung, has been deeply affected by the poaching incident. Strung, a photography enthusiast, captured images of the swans near the boardwalk and expressed shock and sadness over the harm caused to the nesting birds. The senseless act has left many saddened and concerned about the welfare of wildlife in the park.

Authorities have not disclosed the specific bird species that was poached when questioned by CBC. However, local residents and park visitors are united in their hope that the perpetrator is apprehended and faces the appropriate legal consequences for their actions. The incident has stirred emotions within the community, with many calling for justice and expressing sorrow over the impact on the wildlife at Point Pelee National Park.
