Carla MacLeod, the head coach of the Ottawa Charge, received a diagnosis of breast cancer, prompting an outpouring of support and well wishes from the hockey community. Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming kindness she has received, MacLeod spoke at a news conference following a practice session, a day after publicly sharing her diagnosis.

As a two-time Olympic gold medalist in women’s hockey and the coach of the Charge since the league’s inception in the 2023-24 season, MacLeod will be traveling to Calgary to consult with her medical team, causing her to miss an upcoming game against the Minnesota Frost. However, she anticipates returning to her coaching duties later in the week.

Despite her health challenges, MacLeod remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of early detection and regular medical checkups. She is eager to begin her treatment journey and resume her passion for coaching.

During a team meeting, Charge players learned of MacLeod’s diagnosis and expressed their unwavering support for their coach. Assistant coach Haley Irwin will step in during MacLeod’s absence, with the team rallying behind her as they prepare to face the Minnesota Frost.

The players emphasized their unity and solidarity, describing themselves as a close-knit family that will miss MacLeod’s presence on the sidelines. They commended her resilience and positive attitude, drawing inspiration from her courage in the face of adversity.
