Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically died at the age of 54 in an accidental drowning incident while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025.
‘Necessary Action’
Tenisha Warner conveyed through her legal representation that she endeavored to address her late husband’s “complex estate” privately while upholding his final wishes for their daughter, MacKenzie. She emphasized Malcolm’s intentions to provide for their daughter and herself, stating that as a single mother, she had no alternative but to safeguard their rights before any potential statute of limitations lapsed.
Trust Dispute
In her legal petition, Tenisha Warner disclosed that the trust established in 1996, predating her relationship with Malcolm-Jamal Warner and the birth of their daughter, designates 100% of the trust estate to other family members, primarily Pamela Warner, alongside his father and half-sister. Allegedly, funds from life insurance policies and retirement accounts exceeding $1.25 million US have already been disbursed to these beneficiaries.
The legal filing asserts that before his demise, Warner failed to fulfill various financial commitments to his wife and daughter. Tenisha Warner is pursuing a claim of at least $1,276,042.46 US, advocating for her and their daughter to be acknowledged as excluded heirs and spouses, freezing trust disbursements during the legal proceedings, and demanding a comprehensive financial report of all transactions and assets.
The alleged financial obligations include:
- $1,000,000 US from a term life insurance policy with Tenisha as the sole beneficiary.
- $50,542.46 US related to an annual gift provision of $16,000 US per year.
- $30,500 US designated for Roth IRA contributions at the maximum level described.
- $195,000 US for salary commitments at $5,000 US per month for Tenisha’s role as “chief of staff.”
Additionally, the petition highlights the requirement in the prenuptial agreement to establish a college fund for their daughter.
