The Toronto International Film Festival has kicked off its preparations by unveiling five special presentations for this year’s event, marking a significant announcement following the earlier revelation of the opening-night film and gala presentations. Among the highlights of the 51st edition of Canada’s renowned film festival are the premieres of the star-studded sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian revenge thriller “Glaxo,” the romance film “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the true-story Nazi hunting drama “The Housewife,” and the action-packed film “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” featuring Mahershala Ali.
“Alpha Gang” is set to have its international premiere at the festival, marking its debut outside its home country. Industry analysts anticipate that the film, being American, will have an earlier world premiere at the Telluride film festival. The other four films are slated for their world premieres at TIFF.
Directed by the unconventional duo David and Nathan Zellner, “Alpha Gang” narrates the tale of a group of aliens posing as a 1950s biker gang sent to invade Earth. However, their plans encounter a hurdle when they confront the most potent human defense – emotions. The movie, initially announced in October 2024, underwent several delays and cast adjustments, with the current ensemble including Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, and Léa Seydoux.
Adapted from a 2009 novel by Argentinian writer Hernán Ronsino, “Glaxo” delves into a small-town drama where the arrival of a policeman and his captivating wife triggers a series of events involving desire and revenge. Director Benjamin Naishtat, known for his previous work “Rojo,” which premiered at TIFF in 2018, typically explores Argentina’s social and political landscape, with “Glaxo” expected to reflect the country’s loss of innocence during the turbulent period of the 1950s-1980s.
“The Substance’s” Margaret Qualley stars in “Love of Your Life,” alongside Patrick Schwarzenegger, in a poignant narrative about love and loss. Produced by Ryan Gosling and helmed by director Rachel Morrison, known for her work on “Black Panther” and “Fruitvale Station,” the film follows a widow’s journey to reconnect with a past love. Gabriel Basso has also been announced to join the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Housewife,” a psychological drama by Canadian filmmaker Ben Shirinian, is inspired by a New York Times journalist investigating a suspected Nazi officer in 1964. The plot thickens as he forms a bond with the officer’s wife, portrayed by Naomi Watts, along with Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Norman Reedus.
Starring Mahershala Ali, “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” portrays a deeply religious hitman navigating a John Wick-inspired thrill ride across Houston following his wife’s demise. Directed, produced, and written by Bassam Tariq, the film’s teaser trailer was released recently, featuring Giancarlo Esposito, John Cho, and Tramell Tillman in the cast. The movie is anticipated to hit theatres later this fall.
TIFF had previously disclosed that Siân Heder’s “Being Heumann” would open the festival, while “Prima Facie” and “The Assassin(s)” would be presented as gala premieres. The festival is scheduled to take place from September 10 to 20 this year, with the complete lineup of films set to be revealed on August 11. Ticket sales will commence for TIFF members on August 21 and for the general public on August 31.
