A high school football player from Winnipeg, who sustained a severe neck injury in a game a fortnight ago, has passed away. Stephanie Ciaralli conveyed the heartbreaking news on Facebook, mentioning that Darius Hartshorne, affectionately known as Dee, is now at peace. Ciaralli, who was raising Hartshorne, expressed deep sorrow for his recent struggles but highlighted her immense pride in the young man he had become.
Hartshorne, a Grade 12 student playing for the Sisler Spartans, was injured while returning the opening kickoff in a game against the Tec Voc Hornets on October 17. Matt Henderson, the superintendent of the Winnipeg School Division, expressed condolences and emphasized the need to support the affected schools and individuals during this tragic time.
Sean Esselmont, the head coach of the Spartans, described Hartshorne as a well-liked and invaluable team member, praising his genuine and wonderful nature. The team has been honoring Hartshorne by wearing decals featuring his jersey number and prominently displaying his jersey at games.
After being placed in an induced coma due to health complications, Hartshorne had shown hopeful signs but unfortunately did not recover. Political figures, including Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan and Premier Wab Kinew, extended their sympathies to Hartshorne’s family and the Sisler community. Coun. Vivian Santos also paid tribute to Hartshorne’s kindness, strength, and compassion during a city council meeting.
Hartshorne, who turned 17 while in the hospital, received heartfelt messages and support from various individuals and organizations. The community mourns the loss of a promising young athlete, remembered for his kindness and positive impact.
