As Quebec braces for freezing rain and the approaching winter tire deadline, motorists are facing a rush to secure tire change appointments. The demand has surged to the extent that many are realizing they have delayed booking too long. Marc Prudhomme, the owner of Garage Nistech in Gatineau, disclosed that their schedule is fully booked for the next two weeks.
The impending freezing rain warning in western Quebec this weekend, just preceding the province’s Dec. 1 deadline for switching to winter tires, is intensifying the urgency for drivers. Violating this deadline by not changing tires and subsequently being involved in accidents or traffic incidents can result in fines ranging from $200 to $300 plus additional charges.
Prudhomme highlighted the exceptional early start to tire change bookings this year due to an early snowfall in November, resulting in a sudden influx of inquiries. He further explained that a shortage of staff has exacerbated the situation, attributing it to a broader industry challenge in recruiting specialized tire changers for seasonal demands.
Despite widespread alerts about hazardous road conditions and the imminent deadline, a significant number of drivers are delaying tire changes. CAA Quebec’s automotive expert, Jesse Caron, cautioned procrastinators, emphasizing the difficulty in securing last-minute appointments.
Caron stressed the importance of adhering to the law by changing tires and emphasized the critical role winter tires play in ensuring road safety during colder temperatures. He dispelled the misconception that installing winter tires early can cause premature wear, clarifying that early installation does not harm the tires.
Additionally, Caron differentiated between all-season and all-weather tires, emphasizing that only all-weather tires with the mountain snowflake symbol meet Quebec’s legal requirements. Prudhomme echoed the sentiment, urging drivers to be proactive in making the seasonal tire switch as winter approaches.
While Quebec mandates winter tires between Dec. 1 and Mar. 15, Ontario does not have a similar regulation in place.
