Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, emphasized the importance of respecting the red lines set by Greenland concerning sovereignty in discussions with the United States. Nielsen stated that the semi-autonomous region, part of Denmark, is willing to engage in talks for a “better” relationship with the U.S., although the specifics of the imminent deal mentioned by President Donald Trump are still unknown.
The announcement from Trump came after a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Nielsen asserted that only Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark are authorized to negotiate any deals or agreements concerning their territories.
Nielsen expressed openness to collaborating with the U.S. on mineral resources and security, awaiting further clarification on the motivations behind the U.S.’s actions. Trump had previously threatened tariffs on European countries to assert control over Greenland but later retracted this stance in favor of a future deal on Greenland and Arctic security.
The Prime Minister highlighted the need for enhanced security in the region and confirmed ongoing discussions with Denmark and NATO in this regard. Regarding the potential inclusion of Greenland in the U.S.’s “Golden Dome” missile defense system, Nielsen expressed optimism in finding mutually beneficial solutions.
Despite past rhetoric affecting Greenlanders’ perceptions of the U.S., Nielsen stressed the importance of maintaining open and respectful dialogue for cooperation. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, emphasized territorial integrity and the non-negotiable nature of sovereignty while advocating for constructive discussions on Arctic security with allies.
NATO’s spokesperson, Allison Hart, clarified that sovereignty compromises were not proposed during discussions between Rutte and Trump. The focus remains on preventing foreign influence in Greenland and preserving the region’s security. European leaders, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, underscored the importance of upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity in the Arctic region while supporting dialogue between Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S.
Public skepticism in Copenhagen towards Trump’s shifting positions was evident, with individuals expressing doubts about the reliability of his statements. The European allies are urged to unite in safeguarding Arctic interests and resisting external threats while fostering cooperation based on mutual respect and shared principles.
