Mark’s mother, Merl Bistoyong, expressed disappointment and disgust with the verdict outside the courtroom, stating that it was not justice but a crime. The trial showcased a stark contrast in Laureano’s appearance from earlier proceedings, where he appeared more groomed and formal.
Back in October 2024, Laureano was convicted of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing his 16-year-old cousin during a family barbecue in July 2023. The trial highlighted the division within the Bistoyong family, with some members no longer acknowledging their familial connections.
Expert testimony from forensic psychiatrists, including Dr. Gary Andrew Chaimowitz, indicated Laureano’s mental health condition, diagnosing him with schizophrenia. Chaimowitz testified that Laureano was experiencing a schizophrenic episode during the incident and could not distinguish right from wrong. The judge accepted the expert evidence that Laureano’s actions were influenced by his mental state at the time of the crime.
During the trial, emotions ran high with supporters of Mark’s family present in the courtroom, expressing their discontent with the verdict. The court proceedings faced disruptions as people voiced their displeasure, leading to temporary interruptions in the court session. Over 200 victim impact statements were submitted during the trial, highlighting the widespread impact of Mark’s death on the community.
